Europe and Eurasia: Remarks at Meeting With Special Monitoring Mission Representatives

SECRETARY TILLERSON: So nice to meet you.

MR POW: James Pow.

PARTICIPANT: (Inaudible.) Nice to meet you.

SECRETARY TILLERSON: So nice to meet you.

PARTICIPANT: He’s the casualty that we had. He was in (inaudible) doing monitoring there and his injuries – lungs have had some after-effects as well, at least (inaudible).

SECRETARY TILLERSON: Wow. What was the --

PARTICIPANT: He’s a former Marine.

SECRETARY TILLERSON: What was the cause of the injury?

PARTICIPANT: Hand grenade (inaudible).

SECRETARY TILLERSON: Hand grenade?

PARTICIPANT: Glad to serve. It’s a great mission, great people. Glad to be here.

SECRETARY TILLERSON: God bless you.

PARTICIPANT: Thanks for your hard work.

PARTICIPANT: He’s a great (inaudible) and he has a dedicated leadership, in short, and (inaudible).

PARTICIPANT: Absolutely.

PARTICIPANT: And Alexander Hug is the Swiss general who is the deputy head of the monitoring mission. So he’s in charge, day to day, of getting them out.

SECRETARY TILLERSON: Well, listen, we really appreciate what the monitoring team does for us, a vital role that you’re playing. But as you know, Ambassador Volker and I want to get some protection in there so everyone can do their job more effectively, and primarily just lower the violence, save lives. That’s what all – that’s all we want to do is to save lives. But appreciate you very much.

PARTICIPANT: We are thankful, grateful to get support.

SECRETARY TILLERSON: Thank you.

PARTICIPANT: (Inaudible.)

QUESTION: One quickly --

QUESTION: Mr. Secretary, what are the obstacles to getting a UN peacekeepers deal?

QUESTION: Did you make any progress today with your Russian counterpart? Did you get any commitments?

PARTICIPANT: Okay. Thank you very much. Thank you.

QUESTION: Why keep meeting with the Russians if you’re not getting any commitments?

PARTICIPANT: Thank you very much.

SECRETARY TILLERSON: Well --

QUESTION: What did you get today?

SECRETARY TILLERSON: I’m not going to tell you specifically what we get. If we can get progress, that’s what we get. We get good dialogue, we get cooperation. We don’t have it solved. You don’t solve it in one meeting.
