If you're planning to head out this May bank holiday weekend, you will probably want to pack your umbrella as well as your sunglasses according to the latest forecast from the Met Office.

Forecasters have predicted an unsettled few days for the North East, starting with a cloudy and wet night on Friday as heavy downpours arrive from the south. Saturday is expected to be cloudy accompanied by patchy rain and drizzle, with the best chance of drier and brighter spells towards the end of the day and highs of 12°C.

Looking ahead to Sunday and Monday, conditions are forecast to remain unsettled with spells of rain that could be accompanied by thunder at times. Unfortunately the North East isn't expected to see lengthy sunny spells until Tuesday afternoon, so get that big coat on for your bank holiday plans.

Looking ahead to the rest of the month, the chance of rain and showers will reduce as high pressure builds from next week, the Met Office said. This will bring more dry and fine weather for most areas next weekend - although there is still a chance of some showers - before less settled conditions set in once again around the middle of May.

The forecast for the latter half of the month predicts spells of wet weather for most of the UK, with "no strong signs for any exceptional temperatures", forecasters said, with warm days and chilly nights expected. Here's what the weather looks like across the long weekend in Newcastle.
