Two Rhode Island state troopers to run in Boston Marathon

BOSTON, Mass. (WLNE) —  The Boston Marathon is just three days away, and two Rhode Island state troopers will be running in the 128th race, and one trooper for the first time.

“It is a large distance, so you really do have to think about that,” Det. Lt. Derek Melfi said. “I know somewhat what to expect, but Boston is a whole different animal. It’s a very challenging course.”

Melfi said he is nervous but his reason for running, Cops for Kids with Cancer, is keeping him motivated.

“They are going through a tremendous fight and they are battling like warriors to win this and it is great that we can help in that and raise some money,” Melfi said.

So far, state police said they have raised over $15,000, surpassing their initial goal of $5,000.

The troopers are still accepting donations for Cops for Kids with Cancer.
