HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - On the steps of the State Capitol on Sunday morning, a group of women led by House Majority Leader Della Au Belatti voiced their concerns over what they call "misleading tactics" by Gov. David Ige's campaign.

They say his challenger Colleen Hanabusa is being mischaracterized in the race for governor.

The group says the Ige camp is attacking Hanabusa as "criticizing", when she is simply pointing out the facts and that as an incumbent the governor should expect an examination of his record of achievements.

The Ige campaign released a statement on Sunday in response to the allegations:

"It is unfortunate but not unexpected, given her track record, that Hanabusa has gone into attack mode," the statement reads.

"The truth is that Governor Ige has a lifelong record on equal justice, pro-choice, and advancing women's rights."

"When a male candidate points out flaws in an opponent's work, he is viewed as strong, passionate and confident," Rep. Della Au Belatti said. "But when strong words come from a woman, even one with decades of experience, it is described as 'too critical," Belatti said.

"This clear double standard must stop," Belatti said.
