A 4-minute stretch in the second period doomed the Jamestown High School boys hockey team on Saturday.

Ahead 2-1 after the first period, Minot scored three quick goals to take a commanding lead en route to an 8-4 win in a state-qualifier at the West Region tournament in Bismarck.

"They're a pretty hard team to slow down," Jamestown coach Matt Stockert said of Minot. "They're the ones going to the state hockey tournament and deservedly so."

Minot all-state forward Matt Flom scored his first goal in the opening period, and teammate Sage Bessette also had a goal to put Minot up 2-0. However, Jamestown's Nick Schaack cut that to one with an assist from Austin Rene.

In the second period, Flom added two quick ones and Bessette had another that effectively sunk the Blue Jays.

Jamestown's Jared Schultz scored from Gage Thompson to cut it to two, but that was leveled out by Logan Bischof's goal more than 5 minutes later.

Third-period goals from Schultz and Nick Stockert trimmed the lead to 7-4 with less than 7 minutes to go, but the offense couldn't muster any more scoring, already having put four goals on all-state netminder Breydan Effertz.

"We did a pretty good job of getting the puck to the net on opportunities," Stockert said. "When we did, the puck went in the net. If we could have just eliminated some of their opportunities, it would have been a closer game."

The graduation of eight seniors leaves quite a few holes to fill. Nick Stockert led the team in points (37) and did so without spending a minute in the penalty box. Goalie Brian Wenzel and defenseman Nick Urquhart graduate as well.

"We graduate a lot of experience with goal-scorers, role players, defensemen and a good goalie," Stockert said. "What are the (underclassmen) gonna do from now until November? That's what it's about. It's a matter of preparation."
